Europe Trip 2011

Welcome to a picture overview of my trip to Europe in June 2011. The main reason was to attend the clebrations of my brother Martin's 25th wedding anniversary in the Swiss Alps and that is were the trip started. From there I took the train to Italy where I met my good friend Peter Smits and his girlfriend Angie. After a fun day in Arona and Milan, Angie left back for Holland and Peter and I continued our trip to Barolo in Piedmonte. After some interesting visits to some reknowed wine houses in Barolo, we made our way via the coast to Tuscany.
We stayed at the Villa Trasqua winery were we received a warm welcome and stayed in a beautiful appartment in a renovated barn at the estate. After exploring the region for 3 days we returned via Switzerland and France to Amsterdam. The next day we had a great Aussie Wine 'get together' with friends and ex-colleagues at the Lloyd Hotel in Amsterdam.
It was a great trip and please enjoy the picture impression below:
The back of the Chalet we stayed at in Monthey Switzerland, ideal for such a big group.
The view from the back of the Chalet, towards the south part of the Swiss Rhone Valley.
Part 1 of the frontview with a thunder storm building above the wintersport region called "Portes du Soleil" (the doors to the Sun)
Part 2 of the front view, the north part of the Rhone Valley with in the back, the Geneva Lake.
Me and my Mum, a rare side of both having just water in front of us.
The Blom berlicum family shot, the grey one in the middle is the Groom!
Lovely Arona, situated at the Lake Maggiore in North Italy
Liquoirce root ice cream at a ice cream parlor in Arona ( the brown one with the sticks), best ice cream in the world, I had 3 in a row!!!
Something not to be missed in Milan, Il Duomo.
Peter and Angie in front of the Teatro alla Scala, the famous opera temple in Milan.
The serious part of the job is starting, first winery visit: Marchesi di Barolo
massive Slovenian Oak barrels in 'Marchesi di Barolo' cellars, so different from Australia
the treasure room in the private wine cellar, where all the museum stock is kept, some of these bottles date of hundred years back,
After Marchesi di Barolo, we visited the cellars of Borgogno in Barolo, they are know for the availibility of back vintages, going back to over 50 years.
The formidable selection they opened for us to taste, including the 1982 Riserva (nearly 30 years old).
The view from the roof terrace at Borgogno, here the Castle of Barolo, against the back drop of the vineyards that produce the fruit for the Barolo wines.
Beautiful Barolo, even without the wines, worth a visit!
The proof we were really there !
On Holy soil
Mode of transport!
On the way to Tuscany, we had to make a stop in Portofino, Jet Set pitstop during the Summer season.
View from the roof terrace on top of the winery of Villa Trasqua, overlooking their Sangiovese vineyards.
The winery has a domesticated wild boarroaming around, the adopted it after they shot the mother. wondering what happens to this one around Xmas.
A tour around the Villa Trasqua winery, accompanied with a different wine at each other area, cleverly done!
A more modern style of wine making with smaller and newer oak barriques.
The view from our appartement at Villa Trasqua
The renovated barn with the appertment on the 2nd floor
Kitchen and Living room
Master bedroom
we drove a lot around and passed many beautiful townships, like this one: Greve di Chanti, in the heart of the Chianti Classico region.
Inside " Macelleria Falorni" a artisan butchery and deli with beautiful regional products, a must to visit when in Greve in Chianti. Also a lot products are vacum packed, ideal to bring home when travelling.
A wine event billboard with the famous Gallo Nero signage, which stands for the Chianti Classico wines, the best of the Chianti's.
this is a view from the village of Montalcino on top of a hill, overlooking the vineyards that produce the fruit for the famous Brunello di Montalcino, stunning!
Just a small selection of Brunello di Montalcino wines in a local wine shop, the owner refused to lock me in, strange?
these signs give you a better idea on the wine production in and around Montalcino
We were very lucky to get a tour around the cellars of Biondi santi as they only work with appointments, thats the time that a business card with 'wine importer' comes handy. Biondi Santi are the best and most famous Brunello producers and are an instituation in the wine world. The wines I tasted were still very young but great potential, if you have any your cellar let them age and fully enjoy their richness when ready.
We ended the last night of our Tuscan adventure in San Gimignano, an ancient hill top town, known for its many towers
Beautiful old buildings in San Gimignano, as at so many places in Italy and most in good shape, the maintenance must cost fortunes.
Personally I think this is one of the most beautiful restaurant views in the world! Restaurant Le Vecchie Mura in San Gimignano and the food was good as well.
On top of the Gotthard pass in Switzerland on the way home, looking down into valley that takes you to Italy.
The Aussie & Kiwi wine 'get together' at the Lloyd Hotel in Amsterdam, with friend and GM Piet Boogert in the middle at the back, Thanks again Piet!
As usual at this kind of gatherings, people eat
and eat
The Holiday Inn Amsterdam Clan, Paul Katerberg, Piet Boogert, Arjen Blom, Marjoke Wubben. unfortunately Ingrid Cleerdin had left already and missed the photo opp.
